Course: LLB Law
I chose DMU because it’s an up and coming university with a wealth of opportunities and desire to succeed. The reason why I choose to study at De Montfort is because it allowed me to develop my skills and most of all, try something new.
I was initially attracted to the Business Management and Law course as I wanted to keep my options as broad as possible having studied science subjects for A Levels. After my first year studying the combined degree, I fell in love with law and had the opportunity to transfer over to the LLB Law course.
My legal development has taken many forms. Gaining skills such as communication, information technology, team work, problem solving, planning and organization and self- management and development. Most importantly I have learnt a wealth of skills including vital ones required of a qualified lawyer such as attention to detail and using initiative.
What I enjoy most about the course is that the law is taught in a way that allows me to understand and relate to it. Relating to the topic makes it a lot easier and enjoyable to learn.
The legal team provides the upmost support whenever required. Getting to know your tutors well is vital as they are always willing to provide help and support where needed (and it will be needed at some point). Not only are they there to support you through your degree but if needed they are there to help with extra’s such as work-load or if you feel things are too much.
I undertook a year in industry as the Legal Intern Europe, Middle East and Africa for GE Healthcare. This was a twelve month internship supporting the in-house senior counsel of the pharmaceutical, life sciences and medical diagnostics divisions of GE Healthcare as well as assisting the compliance, intellectual property and marketing teams. Experience and knowledge gained surrounding the structure of how an in-house legal team functions in an international company.
The placement experience has development my professionalism skills drastically, as well as my planning and organizational skills so much so I was praised several times which at GE Healthcare. I feel after this experience I will be able to make the transition from university to working life with ease and will settle into the working life environment comfortably.
