Professor Cillian Ryan has been appointed as the Pro Vice-Chancellor/Dean for De Montfort University's (DMU) Faculty of Business and Law.
Prof Ryan has had an impressive career in academia, having held substantive posts in institutions in England, Ireland, Wales, Canada and USA. He has also held visiting roles in countries such as Hong Kong, Australia and France and brings considerable international experience to the university.
Prof Ryan said: “I am honoured and excited to have been appointed as PVC/ Dean for Business and Law given the university’s proud record of life-changing research and outstanding teaching and learning.
"I look forward to working with colleagues, both in the Faculty and across the university, to continue to build on your achievements and to ensure that De Montfort is recognised as being among the best modern universities in the world.”
Cillian joins DMU from the University of Birmingham, where he holds two roles. One is a cross-university role as Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences and he is also Deputy to the PVC and Head of the College of Social Sciences.
At Birmingham he was, until recently, an academic member of the university’s governing body, and has chaired or held roles on numerous strategic committees.
Cillian is a Jean Monnet Chair in European Economics and maintains a substantial research profile, specialising in European Studies and international financial trade, which sees him sitting on a wide variety of bodies both nationally and internationally, representing both his discipline and the HE sector.
In 2013, DMU became one of only three universities in the UK to be named a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence by the European Commission in recognition of its research and teaching in the field of European Union studies.
