Strategic Management and Marketing
The Department of Strategic Management and Marketing provides a wide range of highly applied and up-to-date programmes in Business, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Management and Marketing. Employability and recognising the global nature of business are two other core strengths in both our teaching and research.
The Department currently has 97 staff who are organised into specialist subject areas that look after each of the above disciplines. This structure ensures that there is a strong focus on a student’s chosen subject area and enables them to have access to specialists in that field.
We feel that all programmes should have a close-link to the ‘real world’ in order to give our students true, simulated exposure to the work place. As a consequence, a significant number of our teaching staff are also involved in consultancy and training with large international companies and organisations in both the private and public sectors. The knowledge that they gain from this work feeds directly back into our modules so as to give our students plenty of examples of real life problems and solutions.
Many of our staff have impressive research backgrounds and their research is fed directly into the modules that we teach. In addition, a large number of staff in the Department have produced textbooks that achieve significant global sales.
We enjoy excellent relationships with professional bodies. For example, our marketing programmes are recognised by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM) with whom we have close links and who accredit our work and, where applicable, grant exemptions from their qualifications.
The Department's stable of programmes provides students with an extensive array of options from which to choose their future business path. Core business themes run through all the courses giving our students a solid business foundation for their career. All of our programmes have been designed to give students a supportive and yet challenging and stretching experience, which alongside optional placements give our students the edge as they step into the world of work.
The department has strong links to professional bodies giving our postgraduate students the opportunity to work towards their professional qualifications whilst studying. Our teaching is extensively underpinned by the research we do and the department encourages strategic business thinking, essential in the modern business role.
