Department of Computer Technology
The Department of Computer Technology focuses on the theoretical and practical foundations of computer systems. Computer technologists construct a safe, secure and reliable information infrastructure; they create the theoretical breakthroughs that provide the innovative, next generation of systems.
We offer a range of taught courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level in computer science, software engineering, forensic computing and computer security.
Departmental research groups focus on software engineering and computer security, 3D imaging, and earth and planetary remote sensing.
Industrial collaboration is currently focused in the areas of embedded systems and computer security.
Homes get smarter to save lives
Researchers from the Department of Computer Technology are helping develop a number of 'smart homes' that will help older people live more independently and can summon assistance in life-threatening emergencies.
Researchers at De Montfort University (DMU) have been developing an international framework that will enable products and applications from different suppliers to work together in the same house. Their work has now been adopted by CENELEC – a European standards organisation – as a new standard.
DMU is a member of The Application Home Initiative (TAHI), a group that works to help develop technology to make the ‘future home’ possible.
