Baffled by all the jargon there is in higher education? This section provides useful acronyms and terminology relating to higher education both at De Montfort University (DMU) and nationally, with links through to websites for further information.

Managed Learning Environment (known as 'myDMU’) provides students with online access to a wide range of tools to support student life.


Module leader

Module leader is responsible for academic leadership, module management, and assessment for the module.


National statistics

UK National statistics provides official UK statistics covering Britain's economy, population and society, at national and local level.

Vocational awarding body, no longer an acronym: Previously known as the Northern Advisory Council for Further Education (NACFE) and the Northern Council for Further Education (NCTEC).

National Foundation for Educational Research is an independent educational research institution aiming to provide education and training, nationally and internationally, by undertaking research, development and dissemination activities, and by providing information services.

National Institute of Adult Continuing Education is a non-governmental organisation working on behalf of adult learners to represent their interests locally, nationally and internationally.

Further education (National)


Nursing and Midwifery Council is a regulator with responsibility to approve educational institutions and programmes leading to registerable or recordable qualifications.

National Open College Network is an awarding body for Access programmes.

Where at least part if not all of the programme is to be delivered by staff at another institution.



National Qualifications Framework assists higher education providers to maintain and inform comparability of academic standards. Relates to FHEQ.

National Student Survey is a national student satisfaction survey conducted annually, surveying final year students in all English, Welsh and Northern Irish HE institutions.

Northern Universities Consortium for Credit Accumulation and Transfer (also referred to as NUCCAT) is a credit consortium for northern universities providing information about credit frameworks. Relates to SEEC.

Office for Standards in Education inspects and regulates services which care for children and young people, and those providing education and skills for learners of all ages. Relates to CIF.
