Leicester Comedy Festival
DMU is proud to be the birthplace of the Leicester Comedy Festival. Begun as a project by DMU Arts Management students in 1994, it is now Europe's longest-running comedy showcase and was named one of the top five comedy festivals in the world by The Guardian.
Comedians such as Graham Norton, Jimmy Carr, Sean Hughes, Jason Manford, Roseanne Barr, Jenny Eclair and Josh Widdicombe have all played the festival that is renowned for unearthing great new comedic talent.
DMU has supported the festival throughout its development and now collaborates on more events than ever before. This fruitful partnership, formalised in 2011, has led to incredible opportunities for students including:
- Hosting an annual lecture giving a different take on comedy featuring a secret special guest!
- DEMON FM presenters covering festival events and interviewing performers
- Students from DMU's Radio Production and Technology producing live inserts for radio shows, podcasts, videos and photo galleries
- An award-winning edition of the Demon Newspaper, featuring interviews with comedians and reviews from the shows
In addition, DMU has hosted the Leicester Comedy Festival Business Breakfast for business people to celebrate the event, which contributes some £3million to the local economy.
Leicester Comedy Festival is one of the best events this city has to offer and we’re very proud it began here at De Montfort University.
