What is the Square Mile?
De Montfort University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard has pioneered a unique and innovative university community engagement initiative that seeks to 'demonstrate how the skills, knowledge and expertise of the university can assist and sustain the development of a community and improve the wellbeing and prospects of the residents'.
The Square Mile initiative is currently engaging with students, staff and residents as well as public services, the local authority and businesses in identifying and responding to the needs and challenges faced by the local area.
Through working in partnership with the community, the local authority and other stakeholders, the initiative aims to show how De Montfort University can utilise life changing research and teaching to make a measurable difference to people's lives.
Square Mile is underpinned by the Vice-Chancellor's commitment to position universities as a 'public good': vital contributors to the social, political and economic wellbeing of the communities in which they are based.
