The projects
There are currently 20 projects running through the first phase of the Square Mile project. Each project has been developed by staff and students at DMU in collaboration with members of the local community to ensure that the needs of those living within the Square Mile area are recognised and addressed.
The projects fall into one of five packages:
Projects included within each package will have both specific aims and objectives and will also contribute to the overarching aims of the Square Mile project.
It is key that the local community are engaged with the projects being delivered throughout the project to ensure that we all make maximum use of the opportunities presented by the advent of the Square Mile project.
Community Package|
All the Square Mile projects are community focused however; 4 of the 20 projects are distinguished by their ambition to engage as wide a network of residents as possible, due to their open-ended nature and focus on collective and outdoor activity. The aim of the community package is to enable residents to meet one another, which was a key piece of feedback we received from the door-step survey.
Health Package|
A series of 5 tightly focused projects have been developed to work with targeted groups with distinct health needs.
Local Identity Package|
Results from the door-step survey indicate there are poor ratings of the living environment and a sense of negative association with the local area. This is compounded by a transient community living side by side with longer term residents. The Local Identity package endeavors to enable all groups to share a collective identity and connect with their area.
Media Package|
We have three projects that bring together residents, DMU students and local media organisations to help document and report on Square Mile activities.
Skills Package|
This package offers focused educational projects that seek to work directly with targeted groups in the community, aiming to develop knowledge and skills.
