Leicestershire County Cricket Club
Cricket was first played at Leicester’s Grace Road in the 1870s, the same decade in which an art school was set up across the city in Pocklington’s Walk.
During the last century and a half, Leicestershire County Cricket Club (LCCC) has grown into one of England’s leading teams and De Montfort University (DMU) has educated generations of students since its humble beginnings as Leicester School of Art.
As institutions with a rich history in the local area, LCCC and DMU have much in common, and much to offer each other.
The partnership between them, signed in 2011 by DMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard and Mike Siddall, LCCC Chief Executive, will see the development of joint projects and activities.
These include: coaching for DMU’s student cricket team, the 2012 varsity cricket match being held at Grace Road, co-operation on school initiatives and educational activities, work placements for students and much more.
At the launch of the partnership, Mike Siddall said: "We are delighted to join with DMU in this exciting partnership venture. I believe there are many ways in which we can work together for our mutual benefit. It’s a great opportunity for our coaches and players to be involved with a local university and we look forward to a long and enjoyable association.”
Professor Shellard added: "We are very pleased to announce this partnership with Leicestershire County Cricket Club which complements our drive to share the university’s academic and research expertise with the community, as well as bringing great opportunities and experiences to our students. Our local partnerships are an important part of our strategy for quality and distinctiveness.”
