Leicester City Football Club
The partnership between De Montfort University (DMU) and Leicester City Football Club shows just what diverse and exciting initiatives can come from such relationships.
Among the initiatives that have taken place as a result of the partnership, DMU staff have taught English to a City player, contributed their expertise to efforts to document the club’s rich heritage and organised an event to celebrate Thai culture.
DMU signed a cooperation agreement with the club in 2010 and the first stage of the partnership saw university staff arranging English lessons for new Leicester City signing Yuki Abe, who had moved from Japan.
Leicester City has a proud place in the history of English professional football and important work on documenting the rich heritage of the club is an integral part of the partnership.
DMU is offering the expertise of academics in its the world-renowned International Centre for Sports History and Culture to boost the excellent work already being done to make the club's heritage fully available to fans.
The university also organised a special event to celebrate the King of Thailand’s birthday – a day of celebration in the country – which was attended by the club’s Thai owners and by DMU students from the country.
It is hoped that the collaboration with the club will also result in discounted match tickets for international students and an internship for a DMU student to work for the club.
