Adverse weather advice

In times of adverse weather DMU will provide up to date weather and travel information for staff, students and visitors.

The university will make every effort to remain open and accessible during adverse weather but will ask that staff, students and visitors exercise caution when moving around campus. 

Our Health and Safety team offer the following advice for when you are moving around the university:

• Grounds, car parks and walkways: The Estates Department have an extensive gritting programme however should you encounter any problems please report them to the Estates Helpdesk on emshelpdesk@dmu.ac.uk or +44 (0)116 257 7639
   
• Buildings: Every effort will be made to ensure that buildings are fully operational (heat, light and power)

Public roads and footpaths remain the responsibility of the Highways Department of the local council and may present a greater hazard.

We ask that you take suitable precautions when moving around campus, these include:

• When driving or cycling - carry out some winter checks, reduce your speed, allow space to brake and manoeuvre gradually
   
• When walking - take your time, wear sensible footwear, try and stick to the gritted areas

Closing the university

The university will remain open in all but the most exceptional of circumstances. A decision to close the university (either for part of the day or for an entire day or days) will be taken by the Vice-Chancellor (or the Deputy Vice-Chancellor) or Chief Operating Officer based on advice from Estates, Health and Safety and Security as appropriate.

Any closure will be announced through emails to staff and students and all other available channels (DMU website, Twitter|, Facebook| etc). Line managers should cascade this information to staff without access to email.
