DMU graduate lands job with digital giant after placement

A successful placement year led to a job with one of the world’s largest digital media companies for a De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) graduate.

Brennan Cross, 21, spent a year with Oath - part of the US giant Verizon and is the parent company to AOL and Yahoo! and publishes brands like The Huffington Post. The company’s structured, focused approach to talent development ensured he had experiences in different departments to get an overview of the whole business.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to Oath,” he said. “The company gave me so much during my placement and I’m keen to return and hit the ground running. I loved the culture, the values and their vision which I think is very important aspect for a company. I very much want to be a part of a company that drives to be the best in its industry, and Oath is certainly doing that.”

Brennan, from Worcester, studied International Marketing and Business at DMU and landed his placement through the faculty placement unit. He said: “The support they offer is invaluable throughout the whole process and I can safely say their guidance was crucial in me securing a placement.”
His experience left him fired up to return to DMU, and he was able to apply the core skills he learned in the workplace to the final year of his university life.

He said: “The experience gained even from the very small day to day tasks helped develop skills of which I’ve used liberally during my final year. Most prominently skills such as time management and, I believe, being able to give examples of my placement experience within assessments has greatly benefitted my grades.”

Brennan was bitten by the travel bug at DMU as he took part in several #DMUglobal experiences during his time here. He was able to combine his love of travel with his passion for sport when his football team got to visit Los Angeles and San Diego as a first year, and he is celebrating his final year in June in New York.

He said: “Football has been a significant part of my life at university and where I have met my closest friends.  Getting involved in extra-curricular activities such as being a Course Rep, a placement mentor and the employability mentoring programmes have been extremely rewarding and very enjoyable.”
