Freebies galore, handy information and opportunities to find out more about life at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) were all showcased as part of the annual Freshers’ Fair.
The packed six-hour fair, which was held at the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre in Duns Lane, acts as a
welcoming event to all of the university’s first-year students.
The newest members of the DMU family were able to get a helping hand for their first days on campus with some yummy free treats, a poster sale, useful wellbeing information and loads of discounts to help stretch those pounds a little further.
It is just one of the many activities organised for
#FreshFest17, the eight-day series of fun activities and entertainment led by De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU). It started on Friday with an outdoor cinema screening at The Vijay Patel Building and culminates this Friday night with the last of the #FreshFest17 nights out.
Music in the streets, megaphone calls, gym staff in blue head-to-toe spandex and the pleasant aroma of free popcorn were among the sights, sounds and smells of the fair in the busy leisure centre hall.
More than 500 people had already been through the door in the first two hours – and that was just via one exit where a diligent DSU member was taking numbers with a palm clicker.
The offers included vouchers for free soft drinks, coffee, gym classes, pastries and pizza while money-off vouchers could get cheaper taxi journeys and phone top-ups.
There were also free games where students could win prizes such as a test-your-strength mallet stall and a spin-the-wheel stand.
Details about jobs, internships, work placements, health services, charity expeditions and entertainment opportunities were also available while #DMUlocal, #DMUglobal and the DSU all had friendly faces on-hand to answer any queries.
Among the freshers enjoying the day was Engineering student Muhammad Allarakha, from Leicester, who said: “There was lots of useful information about what’s available in Leicester and I was having a look at the DMU sports teams that had stands there. I thought it was really good.”
Sufyaan Suseedat, who is studying Accounting and Finance, said: “Everyone was really helpful!”
Media Production first-year student Kamilah Karim was equally impressed and said: “There were some interesting stands there and in particularly I was looking at Demon Media’s TV and radio activities – it’s definitely something I would like to get involved with.”

New friends embrace international welcome weekKamilah’s friend Hafse Khan, a third-year Law student, has now been to all the freshers’ fairs since 2015 and she thought this was the best one yet.
“There are some really good vouchers and offers; lots of freebies! That’s one of the best things,” she added.
A similar fair will be held this Thursday at the same venue between 10am and 4pm but this time there will be hundreds of students’ activity groups and societies on hand to explain what hobbies, interests and sports are on offer at DMU. Freshers can meet them all in one place and decide which they might want to join. The poster sale will also return, but held outside this time to create even more space inside.
Tomorrow’s #FreshFest17 events include Trips Tuesday from the Campus Centre where freshers can enjoy days out in Leicestershire and further afield, including to the Harry Potter Warner Brothers Studio Tour in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, and The Big Fat Leicester Quiz in the evening at the Milly’s Lane pub.
