Range of food at DMU nominated for national award

The range and quality of food at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has been shortlisted for a national award.

It is one of two nominations DMU has received in this year's Academic Venue Awards, which recognise the best education services nationwide.

DMU has been named as a finalist for Best Catering Service and Best Conference Venue for the awards, which take place at The Great Hall at Queen Mary University in London on 22nd November.

The Best Conference Venue award rewards the efforts of an academic venue hosting a range of conferences in the last year and DMU was nominated as a result of the services available at The Venue@DMU, the university’s state of the art conference facility.

The Venue@DMU, located in the heart of DMU’s city centre campus, opened in 2015 after a £5million transformation and plays host to all of DMU’s graduation and matriculation ceremonies as well as a number of community events and larger events.

It has been chosen to host several national conferences, including the four-day Global Youth Leadership Summit and The National Radio Conference.

Due to DMU’s strong links with the community through its #DMUlocal and Square Mile projects, The Venue@DMU also acts as an important community hub and has hosted events such as the Women in Policing Conference and Yes You Can Graduations, which were held for year 8 students from Leicestershire.

DMU has also been shortlisted for the Best Catering Service award, which recognises first class catering based on menu versatility and customer service as well as operational management and financial success.

Working in partnership with Chartwells, DMU offers healthy, varied, innovative and good quality catering for students, staff and visitors.

The nomination is in recognition of the diverse catering available across campus at the Riverside Café, Food Village and Simply Fresh Supermarket as well as the university’s hospitality and event offering.

Umesh Desai, Director of Estates and Commercial Services at DMU, believes the nominations are well deserved recognition for the team’s hard work.

He said: “It’s great to see that the fantastic conferencing and catering services available at DMU have received national recognition by being nominated for these awards.

“In The Venue@DMU we have a modern and flexible facility that is a real focal point of campus and can accommodate a range of local, national and international events and I’m sure is one of the best academic venues in the country.

“DMU also provides a catering service which is not only of the highest quality but also covers all dietary requirements and offers vegan and vegetarian dishes as well as a dedicated Halal counter.

“Our conferencing and catering teams work extremely hard to ensure that a first class service is provided so it is no surprise that their work has been acknowledged by the judges of these awards.”
