Baroness urges students to make their vote count at the start of 24-hour 'Be the Change' debate

‘You can make the difference’ were the words of Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon OBE, as she joined De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard to launch our 24-hour ‘Be the Change’ event.

The Chancellor of DMU, who sits in the House of Lords, told students why it is so important that they vote in this year's General Election on June 8.

Over the next 24 hours, members of DMU’s Executive Board will host topical debate for students and staff around key issues such as Brexit, housing, fake news, the jobs market and the environment plus many more ahead of the upcoming election. View the full schedule here.

Baroness Lawrence said: “It is so important that young people get involved, because otherwise we will have a country where you’ll look back and say; why didn’t we speak out? Why didn’t we make our mark?

“This is such a fantastic event organised by Dominic, but it’s so important that everyone engages with it and has their say.

“Listen to what has to be said, let it develop your thoughts and let it educate you, so that come June 8 you can make an informed decision about how to vote.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard said: “What I want to stress is that this will be a very fluid event, with people only speaking for five minutes at a time with plenty of opportunity to debate.

“At the end of the 24 hours, we are going to be putting together a DMU manifesto which we will be submitting to the three major parties.

“Following each session we will be inviting you up to write down your ideas on each of the topic areas and collating your thoughts.”
