He singled out the work under taken by DMU’s Square Mile team, which, through staff and student volunteers, brings the skills and experience across the university’s campus out into the community, working with schools, businesses, charities and other organisations to create a positive impact in the local area.

The Leicester East MP also praisedthe excellent quality of teaching at DMU which has contributed to the Gold ranking, putting it among the best universities in the country.

Mr Vaz said he wanted the House to “note the significance of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and endorses its assigning of equal status to teaching and research at the UK's higher education institutions

“Congratulate institutions that have been awarded a Gold status, including De Montfort University in Leicester, whose Square Mile project has been recognised for making a significant contribution to the social and economic development of its city.

“Welcome the TEF's provision of benchmarked and split metrics to students and parents that matter most to them, including teaching quality, student satisfaction and employment outcomes.

“And commend its Vice-Chancellor Dominic Shellard and its excellent teaching staff for the work that they do.”

DMU was awarded Gold in the TEF, the highest rating possible, putting it into the top third of UK universities which entered the TEF.

The framework is the only Government-run measure of quality in higher education. It shows the added value and real-world impact that attention to strong teaching and learning has on students.
