DMU arranges special screening of I, Daniel Blake

A special screening of the award-winning ‘I, Daniel Blake’ is taking place next week in conjunction with De Montfort University’s #DMUlocal and DMU Square Mile projects.

DMU has teamed up with partner Phoenix Leicester to host a screening of Ken Loach’s critically-acclaimed drama, which won the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year.

The film, which has been nominated for five BAFTAs, is described as ‘a battle cry for the dispossessed’ and gives a voice to the thousands of isolated people struggling across the UK, demonstrating how community support can transform lives.

Prior to the 7.30pm screening at the Phoenix, on Monday 16 January, guests are invited to learn more about #DMUlocal and DMU Square Mile, with a variety of stands showcasing how DMU students, staff and community members are making a difference.

This idea of creating sustainable, potentially life-changing support is at the heart of #DMUlocal and DMU Square Mile, which runs more than 60 projects across Leicester to improve education, health & wellbeing and city regeneration.

Mark Charlton, DMU’s Head of Public Engagement, said: “I, Daniel Blake is essential viewing and I would urge as many people as possible to take the opportunity to see it.

“It is only right that at the same time we let the wider public know about the work #DMUlocal and DMU Square Mile are doing in the community.

“It will also be a valuable opportunity for our students and staff to get feedback and find out how we can do even more to make a difference in Leicester.”

I, Daniel Blake, tells the story of kindly Geordie Daniel. Following a heart attack the recently widowed Blake is told by his doctor to rest, but his local welfare office deems him fit to work.

Trapped in a cycle of bureaucracy, Daniel meets struggling single mum-of-two Katie and resolves to help her.
