Students given a whole new set of reasons to #loveDMU

Revamped sports, round-the-clock library access and millions of pounds of extra funding are just some of the ways De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is making sure it offers students the best experience possible.

To welcome new and returning students back to campus, DMU has unveiled its biggest and best range of measures to help make sure everyone can take full advantage of the opportunities the university has to offer.

In an event held at The Venue@DMU, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard, together with Dan Winney, President of De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) outlined for students this year’s #loveDMU campaign.

The initiative started last year and was presented as a way of celebrating reasons to #loveDMU. Many of the new offers have been created in response to feedback from students, addressing concerns and queries and making sure all students have the same opportunity to succeed.

Some of the new offers this year include:

  • Opening of the Kimberlin Library 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year other than in exceptional circumstances
  • Enhanced IT support for Apple Mac users
  • Electronic submissions of all student dissertations
  • £1m additional investment in DMUsport
  • Extra £615,000 for #DMUglobal opportunities
  • £25,000 to make sure disabled students can enjoy #DMUglobal experiences to the full

On top of this there will be hundreds of thousands of pounds available for students who are facing higher or unavoidable costs.

These funds can help pay for placement travel costs, workshop materials, uniforms or other specialist equipment in certain courses.

Dan Winney, President of DSU, said there should be no barrier to all students being able to take full advantage of every opportunity while at DMU.

He said: “Your university years can be some of the best of your life and #loveDMU is all about making sure that is the case for everyone.

“Over the last year we have listened to what students want and worked closely with DMU staff to make these things happen.

“Now there absolutely no reason not to get stuck in and take full advantage of everything on offer.”
