Students set to celebrate their big day at new Graduation Village

Students can enjoy even more of a party atmosphere for graduations with festival-style food stalls, live music and pop-up shops in a specially-created Graduation Village at DMU.

Starting on Saturday thousands of DMU students will celebrate the end of years of hard work when they collect their degrees.

It will be the biggest-ever graduations event held on campus following the £5million refurbishment of The Venue@DMU. Graduations were first held there in January, when the week included the historic investiture of Chancellor Baroness Doreen Lawrence.

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has teamed up with events company Holland Alexander to transform the space surrounding The Venue@DMU.

A giant marquee will host special receptions for graduating students, their families and guests, with drinks. There will be a bar, live music, and seating so visitors can watch a live stream of the ceremony.

Professor Dominic Shellard, Vice-Chancellor, said: “Next week promises to be a memorable occasion for DMU, as we hold our biggest graduation ceremonies to date on campus.

“We are proud of all graduands, who will join our growing family of alumni from around the world and look forward to the celebrations in our new graduation village.”

And students are being asked to help choose their own playlist for graduations by joining in a Graduation Jukebox. Just tweet @dmuleicester before your ceremony begins with a song you would like to hear and the most popular will be played in the grand finale!

A series of “village boutiques” will be open including the DSU shop, alumni and careers as well as the chance to get last-minute hair and makeup done thanks to Danique salon.

The village is due to open between 8.30am and 7.30pm each day. Candyfloss, sweets and ice cream go on sale from 11am.

Graduands can also look out for photo points in the village to capture selfies and special memories of their big day.

DMU’s summer graduations begin on Saturday, 16 July with three ceremonies for Health and Life Sciences graduands and run through Monday 18 July to 23 July. Click here to find out the full schedule.
