Exclusive new video of Chancellor's Investiture

All the highlights of the spectacular day that saw De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) welcome its new Chancellor have been captured on an exclusive video.

This new film features the historic moment when The Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon OBE officially became part of the DMU family on 22 January 2016.

Students and staff explain what having a Chancellor of her calibre means to them and why she is a perfect fit for the role, while Baroness Doreen Lawrence speaks about the importance of education.

The video showcases the importance as well as the joyful atmosphere of this rare event, which started with a tour of the campus and turned into a giant party.

At the official Investiture ceremony at The Venue@DMU, welcome speeches from Professor Dominic Shellard, Vice-Chancellor of DMU; Ian Blatchford, Chairman of the Board of Governors; and Amie Chapman, De Montfort Students' Union Deputy President for Education, were interspersed with exciting performances from various DMU societies.

After giving her acceptance speech, Baroness Doreen Lawrence led staff and students in a joyful dance.

Baroness Lawrence was chosen for the role because of her strong desire to champion issues affecting students, education and social change - core values she shares with DMU.

As the university's ceremonial figurehead, Baroness Lawrence will have formal responsibility to confer degrees on behalf of DMU and will also play an important ambassadorial role, working with the Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Chancellors to represent the university in the external community.
