David Cameron sends letter of support for #DMUpride

David Cameron has pledged his support for #DMUpride, writing a letter praising the festival as an example of commitment to equality and diversity.

Describing himself as a honorary graduate of De Montfort University, the Prime Minister said he wanted to “send a message of support to all those involved in #DMUpride month”.

In the letter, written from 10 Downing Street, Mr Cameron – who was last year made a Companion of the University for his efforts to introduce the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act – described his “tremendous” pride in the UK’s recognition of equal relationships, whether straight or gay.

The Prime Minister’s message is a powerful recognition and endorsement of the university-wide work going into the annual #DMUpride Festival.

Now in its second year, the event features more than 20 events taking place across the campus and around the city centre, this year including screenings of LGBT-themed films, open lectures addressing LGBT and human rights issues and the launch of the DMU Centre for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ) Research.

The Prime Minister wrote:

“It gives me great pleasure, as a Honorary Graduate of De Montfort University, to send a message of support to all those involved in #DMUPride month.

“I remain tremendously proud that same-sex marriage is now part of the law in our country, and that, whether you are straight or gay, the State now recognises your relationship as equal.

“This is one of a number of reasons why the UK has been judged to be the best place to live in Europe, if you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans.

“I am delighted to see De Montfort continue its commitment to Equality and Diversity with the #DMUPride month.”
