National survey shows DMU students continue to be more satisfied than Government benchmark

The number of students who say they are happy with their time at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is once again higher than required by a Government benchmark, according to a national survey.

The results of this year's National Student Survey (NSS) have been published today, and 85% of DMU students who took part said they were satisfied with their choice of university, which was higher than the benchmark set for the university by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), based on its mix of students and subjects.

DMU's psychology, journalism, economics, history and English courses were all ranked in their national top 10 for overall student satisfaction.

The survey data is gathered from hundreds of thousands of students in their final year at universities across the country. They are asked about the satisfaction they felt they got from their courses in the following areas:

  • Teaching
  • Assessment and feedback
  • Organisation and management
  • Learning resources
  • Personal Development
  • Satisfaction with the students' union

A number of DMU's programmes were rated particularly highly by students.

Psychology courses at DMU (including Psychology, Psychology with Health Studies, Psychology with Education Studies, Psychology with Criminology and more) were rated number one in the country - out of 116 universities offering them - for the sense of personal development students felt they experienced during their studies.

The university's Journalism courses were ranked fourth in the country for overall satisfaction and in the top 10 for their organisation, teaching and assessment.

Students on DMU's economics courses (including BA (Hons) Economics, Economics and Finance, Economics and Politics, Accounting and Economics among others) rated the teaching, assessment, personal development and overall satisfaction in the country's top 10.

DMU's range of both Dance and Footwear courses were ranked as some of the country's most satisfying for assessment and personal development, hitting the top 10 in several categories.

English and History courses were ranked strongly; the English course organisation being the highest rated in the country, with assessment ranked third and the History assessment and overall satisfaction in the top 10 nationwide.

A DMU spokesperson said: "These results are so important because they are one of the main ways we can see what our students think of their time at DMU; to see what we are doing right and where we can work harder to make sure they have the best experience they can. To see such a high level of satisfaction across so many different subjects is extremely rewarding and reflects DMU's commitment to providing a matchless student experience and excellent teaching."
