Historic human rights talk to take place at DMU

Experts in human rights will be dissecting controversial recent news stories at a public discussion to be held at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

In an event to mark 15 years since the Human Rights Act was first drawn up, members of the British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) will visit the university to talk to students and visitors.

As part of a national tour, the BIHR - in partnership with LeicesterShire Equalities Forum - will hold the "Behind the Headlines" event on DMU's campus on Monday 12 October.

During the session, the BIHR will look at some of the big human rights issues that continue to feature in reporting (including mis-reporting) and recent headline-grabbing events.

They will also share anecdotes where the Human Rights Act was vital for people, but this had either had not featured in coverage or the media did not report the story.

Audience members are encouraged to send in their questions about media stories before the event, as well as participate in the discussion on the night.

Christine Nightingale, Head of Equality and Diversity at DMU said: "I am delighted that DMU, on behalf of the LeicesterShire Equalities Forum, is hosting this visit from the British Institute of Human Rights.

"De Montfort University takes its responsibilities for equality and diversity very seriously. This year DMU gained the Race Equality Charter and was listed as a top 100 employer by Stonewall in their workplace equality index. I hope that as many people as possible will come along and participate in the session."
