DMU Square Mile is known for its amazing achievements – and perhaps none more so than helping recruit 1,000 people to the UK stem cell register in one day.

The Square Mile got behind Leicestershire police officer and leukaemia survivor Rik Basra’s campaign to recruit more donors to the register.

Last October, this record-breaking drive brought together people and organisations from across Leicestershire. It was a huge success and as everyone signed up has the potential to save a life, it means there are now 1,000 more lifesavers on the register.

DMU student Amir Mahmood was in charge of a team who were signing people up in Leicester city centre. They were set a target to recruit 150 people in a day – but ended up exceeding their target and recruiting an incredible 300 people.

Amir’s efforts were hailed by the DMU Square Mile team when he was presented with the Leadership Award at the DMU Square Mile Awards 2015.

He said: “I’m really pleased to win. This award means so much because DMU Square Mile really has changed my life.

“I’m very proud of what we all achieved on the stem cell drive – it brought together everyone supporting a great cause. I’m graduating in July but I am hoping to be back to support this year’s drive.”

David Hollis, operations manager for DMU Square Mile, said: “Amir’s energy and leadership were incredible. He has been an amazing ambassador for Square Mile and thanks to him, more people have the potential to save lives.”
