Photography student's GREAT experience in China with #DMUglobal

Third year Photography and Video student Jake Bonham is helping document the British Government’s GREAT Festival of Creativity in Shanghai - thanks to #DMUglobal.

The festival, officially opened by Prince William tonight, is celebrating creativity and commerce in one of the business capitals of the world.

Jake said: “This time last year, I never imagined I would be in Shanghai, photographing such a major event. One of the main aims in my final year was to get involved with the university in ways I hadn’t done before.

“#DMUglobal has provided me with the chance to really push my boundaries and challenge myself, both personally and photographically.”

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)'s groundbreaking #DMUglobal programme is one of the UK's most ambitious schemes to give students valuable international experiences.

DMU was selected by No 10 Downing Street as education partner for the festival, standing alongside top global brands including HSBC, BBC Worldwide and Jaguar Land Rover.

Jake competed against other applicants for the chance to go to Shanghai, on a #DMUglobal faculty-led field trip – by 2017, every undergraduate programme at the university will include a #DMUglobal opportunity.

He added: “I am very proud to be here at the festival with DMU staff and students and really thankful to all the support I have received in the build up to this trip.

Jake accompanied DMU’s international press officer to the festival to experience first-hand the world of international event photography.

Talking about his experience, he said: “I am getting the opportunity to supply news images to DMU’s media team as well as the university’s China Office.

“I am really excited I will get to see my photographs on web pages and social media around the world. This experience will help me stand out from the crowd and give me a foot in the door of an industry I would really like to work in. It is helping me believe in my abilities and inspiring my future career.”

The university is showcasing work from five subject areas at the festival in Shanghai: footwear design, contour fashion, game art and drama, as well as the invention of the artificial pancreas – all of which Jake will be able to capture through his lens.

#DMUglobal has seen students visit Italy, The Gambia, India and France already this academic year, as well provide opportunities in the UK including global conferences and Mandarin lessons.
