'The idea of the scholarship really spurred me on to study'

A postgraduate course can open up other avenues for your career - something which De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) graduate Yasin Nathani discovered after opting to complete an MA in International Business Law through the VC’s 2020 Scholarship scheme.

The Vice-Chancellor’s 2020 Scholarship means De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) students from the UK and the EU who have graduated in the past two years with a 2:1 or above could get a discount of up to 50 per cent on their tuition fees.

Yasin Nathani graduated with a law degree but did not want to become a lawyer; rather, he was interested in pursuing a career in business. An MA offered the chance of gaining the global outlook which impresses employers.

“I hadn’t really thought about doing a master’s because my brother had to pay £7,000 to do one, years ago, and that worried me,” he said. “Then, I decided that I didn’t want to be a lawyer!”

Yasin knew he wanted to move into business but he didn’t know how he could make the change - until his tutor suggested he work towards qualifying for the scholarship, so he could study for his master’s.

“If I wanted to be sure of a 2:1 or above, it was clear I really needed to go for it. The idea of the scholarship really spurred me on to study so that I got the results and could change direction,” he said.

Having been successful, Yasin chose to study International Business Law because he felt it would offer him the most options in business yet still use the knowledge of the law gained through his LLB degree. He also knew that the support given at DMU would further improve his employability.

He said: “With two degrees and lots of experience, you have the ammunition, you stand out. And you will have a lot less debt. It’s a no-brainer. You just have to go for it.”
