High-flying students recognised at awards ceremony

Some of the highest-achieving Health and Life Sciences students were recognised at a prize giving ceremony during graduation week.

HLS-awards-1

WINNER: Bethany Henshaw (middle), winner of two awards at the ceremony

Awards were given for academic achievement, dedication and contribution in a number of different subject areas including Medical Science, Speech and Language Therapy, Audiology and Biomedical Science.

Biochemistry graduate Bethany Henshaw, joint winner of the Dean’s Dementia Dissertation Award, said: “This is something I never thought would happen. It’s a bit surreal but I am very pleased and proud.

“My time at DMU has been a real rollercoaster ride but it has been a wonderful experience and I would even consider doing a PhD here!”

Amir Mahmood, who won the Medical Science Award for Outstanding Dedication, said: “I feel really honoured to see three years of hard work recognised with this award. It hasn’t really sunk in! It’s just incredible.”

Dr Louise Dunford, senior lecturer in Anatomy and Physiology, presented a handful of the awards. She said: “This is the second time we have held an event like this and it is to recognise extra achievement for those at the top of the degree courses.

“It is here mainly to recognise hard work and consistency for those who are performing really well, as well as those who have given a lot to the community.

“Working in the community is a really important part of doing a medical science degree as it gives students the skills that employers are looking for and it is a great way of playing their part.”
