CYP Design – which helps support drug discovery research – received the award at this year’s Medilink East Midlands Awards. It was set up to commercialise technology developed by DMU Professor Bob Chaudhuri.
His work aims to make the discovery and creation of new drugs easier and cheaper.
Dr Bill Primrose, CEO of CYP Design said: “
The competition in our category was steep, so winning the best Start-Up award is a massive boost of confidence for our business at this early stage, and serves as testament to the hard work and effort invested by our whole team.
“This recognition by Medilink of our achievements to date will encourage us to grow a strong business for the future.”
CYP Design aims to develop new products and services based on a set of proteins, called cytochrome P450s (CYPs).
The proteins, found in the human liver, are mostly responsible for metabolising drugs. Crucially, they can help researchers quickly identify chemical compounds that are promising for drug development but may be toxic to humans.
However, while the proteins are used widely in the drugs industry when testing new medicines, they are expensive and unstable to ambient temperatures – making them difficult to store and use as well as increasing the price.
The technology invented by Professor Bob Chaudhuri will allow scientists to use the proteins at room temperature and allow toxicity testing to be automated.
The Medilink award for best Start Up was sponsored by Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd and presented by TV presenter Vivienne Parry OBE.
Dr Nik Kotecha, CEO, said: “Judging the Start-Up category has been a real challenge and all the finalists were very strong and excel in their own fields. However, we offer our congratulations to CYP who have illustrated they are a truly exceptional start up organisation with a winning combination of specialist skills and entrepreneurial flair.”
Medilink aims to help companies establish and grow through a network of academics, businesses and clinicians.
