The Which? University guide has named De Montfort University (DMU) as one of the most creative universities in the country. The guide – launched yesterday (11 September) – places DMU alongside Oxford and Cambridge in the UK’s top ten universities for creativity. More than 10,000 students around the UK took part in the survey, commenting on many aspects of student life – including sport, social life and accommodation – at their particular university. At DMU, some 76% of those surveyed felt that music, theatre, art and dance played a prominent role in university life – helping to identify DMU as one of the most creative universities in the country. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard said: “DMU has to be one of the finest places to study the creative industries in the country. “Our students have designed shoes for the Duchess of Cambridge, can study on the most renowned Contour Fashion course in Britain, have the opportunity to perform on the stage at Curve – the country’s leading regional theatre – and they can even join my flash mob! “We’re also investing in our facilities. A new faculty building for art, design and humanities – and other creative activities – is a key part of our development plans."
Lynette Williams, President of De Montfort Students’ Union, said: “I am thrilled by this. It really is testament to all the hard work that the dedicated staff across the university and the union put in, and shows the world what we already know: that overall student experience at DMU goes above and beyond expectation.” Last week, DMU was also shortlisted for the coveted Research Project of the Year award. Researchers at the university have developed a blood test that could save the lives of sick babies and adults, placing DMU alongside some of the UK's other top universities.
