Teaching excellence at DMU

DMU’s proud reputation for transforming the lives of students from diverse backgrounds has now been recognised by a Gold award under the Teaching Excellence Framework. This indicates that “De Montfort University delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It is of the highest quality found in the UK.”

To date, DMU has received 18 National Teaching Fellow awards in recognition of innovative and transformational teaching, while Senior Lecturer Dr Momodou Sallah was named the most innovative teacher in the country at the 2015 Times Higher Education Awards.

DMU’s Universal Design for Learning, an innovative framework underpinning teaching, learning and assessment, evidences DMU’s commitment to providing an equal learning experience for all. This university-wide initiative was born out of DMU’s Disability Enhancement Project, described as “ground-breaking” by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Student engagement

DMU is dedicated to enhancing the student experience, introducing positive changes as a direct result of feedback in order to help students achieve their goals while at university. Most recently the #loveDMU campaign has been highlighting the enhanced services and support available to them.

In collaboration with the De Montfort Students’ Union, we also employ students to represent their peers in university decisions and issues through the School Rep Coordinator roles.

Graduate outcomes

With an emphasis on employability and many courses professionally accredited, DMU has a strong record of graduate achievement.

DMU graduates’ prospects are well above the national average, with more than 95 per cent of summer 2015 graduates now in work or further study, according to the annual Destination of Leavers in Higher Education report.

In the Times Higher Education mock TEF assessment held in 2016, DMU was “the exceptional performer” for graduate employability, placed first among all UK universities in this category.

Business Management and Sport
Dr Heather Dichter, Principal Lecturer, LCBS Business Management in Sport

Heather has worked with US and British bobsleigh teams, bringing her contacts from the sport into teaching at LCBS, resulting in students in the Sports Heritage module helping to develop the history of British Olympic bobsleigh medallists for the national association. 

Law
Omar Madhloom, Senior Lecturer, Law

Director of the DMU Legal Advice Centre, which works in partnership with Leicester law firms, give students the chance to deal with real-life cases. After a pilot phase, it is set to become a module for all third year students.

Pharmacy
Dr Neena Lakhani, Interprofessional Education (IPE) lead for MPharm

Neena has recently expanded IPE events for Pharmacy students. These involve future health professionals learning from, with and about each other. They are often joined by students from other HLS courses, medical students from the University of Leicester and professional practitioners. The General Pharmaceutical Council has commended this as a beacon of good teaching practice.

Pharmacy
Dr Neena Lakhani, Interprofessional Education (IPE) lead for MPharm

Neena and the Pharmacy Practice team have developed a programme, in collaboration with the University of Leicester and GP Practices, which gives final-year Pharmacy students the opportunity to work with medical students at GP practices. It’s part of a “timely and thought-provoking” scheme that is being expanded after a successful pilot phase.

Pharmacy
Sue Allen, Senior Lecturer, Pharmacy

The individualised Skills Evaluation and Development (iSED) tool, developed by Sue, helps Pharmacy students learn how to respond to symptoms to achieve the best possible outcome for patients. This innovative online program has been described as a particular strength of the MPharm course by the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Midwifery
Sue Nyombi, Senior Lecturer, Midwifery

DMU students are better at adapting to life as a qualified practitioner, according to a senior midwife. The DMU team is delighted with this positive feedback from Gill Harris, of North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which Sue says is down to a combination of theoretical and practical features of the course, such as suturing, an example of a skill taught at DMU that is usually mastered after qualifying.

Investigative Journalism
Dr Richard Danbury, Principal Lecturer, Investigative Journalism MA

Investigative journalism expert Richard has co-authored new research into why whistleblowers and journalists’ sources should be protected in our digital age. The report suggests ten recommendations for journalists and news organisations, researchers and lawmakers.

Computing and Social Responsiblity
Dr Catherine Flick, Senior Lecturer, Computing and Social Responsibility

Catherine is part of a team writing a revised Code of Ethics for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the international body for professionals who make, use, teach about and study computing. The code will be used as the benchmark for ethical standards in computing and engineering around the world. This is just the latest research-focused story to feature Catherine.

Drama
Kate Chapman, Lecturer, Drama

Kate directed TV star Maxine Peake and other accomplished actors in a new radio drama, about Ruth Ellis, for BBC Radio 4. Previous experience includes four years of directing drama in-house for the BBC and Kate brings all this expertise into her teaching.

English/Creative Writing
Dr Kathleen Bell, Principal Lecturer, English and Creative Writing

Kathleen’s thought-provoking poem won first prize at the well-regarded Nottingham Poetry Society’s Open Competition 2016. It was her second award of the year, having been awarded second prize for a different poem by the Brittle Star literary magazine.
