Dr Gerard Moran became Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the newly-created Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities in August 2011 after 10 years as Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design.
Biography
Gerard has extensive experience of working in art and design at the higher education level and has seen many successes during his career at De Montfort University (DMU).
He was educated at St Philip’s Grammar School in Birmingham and undertook his BA at the University of London (UoL). After studying an MA in Literature and the Visual Arts at the University of Reading, Gerard returned to UoL to complete his PhD.
During his PhD and for a period of time afterwards, Gerard taught at a number of institutions, including UoL’s Royal Holloway College and Imperial College.
He also taught on the University of Connecticut’s junior year abroad programme in London and lectured at UoL’s Department of Extra Mural Studies.
Gerard joined the Regional Advisory Council for Higher Education in the East Midlands in 1986, and between 1990 and 1995 worked in a number of senior roles at Lincolnshire College of Art and Design, where he was closely involved in the merger of the college with DMU. Before transferring to DMU in 1998, he developed Lincoln’s portfolio of art and design degree programmes.
Gerard has served as the Vice-Chair for the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design for four years until 2010 and is currently a member of the editorial group for The Business of Design, a book that is due to be published by Pearsons.
Gerard maintains his active interest in the arts through board memberships. He chaired the board of a touring theatre company for seven years and is currently on the board of Leicester’s Phoenix Square.
Outside of work, Gerard continues to read widely and listens to a wide variety of music. He is married with two sons and, even though he now lives in Nottingham, he still supports Aston Villa.
