Description

You could be learning one of the world’s most spoken languages in October of 2017 on the DMU campus. The Confucius Institute (CI) is offering 10 weeks of evening Mandarin classes to DMU students, staff and members of the public.

We will run three blocks of 10-week classes in one academic year. After completing 10 weeks of classes, learners of each level are expected to proceed to a higher stage.

The classes are open to people of all abilities, with four different levels available, allowing you the chance to take up a new language or improve your existing skills.

During your weekly two-hour lesson, you will also be able to develop your awareness of Chinese cultural values and perspectives, which will help you if you want to travel to China or interact with Chinese communities now or in the future.

Ability levels (based on HSK Levels):

Level 1 Stage 1 is for those who have never previously studied Mandarin

Level 1 Stage 2 is for beginners who have studied approximately 20 hours of Mandarin

Level 2 Stage 1 is for those who have studied approximately 40 hours of Mandarin, mastering about 150 commonly used words and phrases

Level 2 Stage 2 is for those who have studied approximately 60 hours of Mandarin, mastering about 200 commonly used words and basic grammar patterns

Level 3 Stage 1 is for those who have mastered 300 commonly used words and related grammar

Level 3 Stage 3 is for those who have mastered about 400 commonly used words and are able to read and write basic Chinese characters

Level 3 Stage 4 is for those who have mastered about 500 commonly used words and are able to read and write Chinese characters

Level 4 Stage 2 is for those who have mastered 900 commonly used words, being able to read or write simple essays in Chinese

Level 5 Stage 1 is for those who have mastered 1200 commonly used words, proficient in reading Chinese and able to write short essays in Chinese

Classes of other levels/stages are available upon request, subject to availability of teachers. 

Price: £70 for 10 classes (textbooks not included)

The tuition fee is non-refundable. If you are a DMU student, you are eligible for a 50% discount with #DMUglobal, so please state you P number upon registration.
