Visitors to a colourful city centre carnival were treated to lessons in ancient Chinese traditions thanks to De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

China scholarship adds whole new world to Egle's Computing studies

Thanks to a Confucius Institute (CI) scholarship and a £400 bursary from #DMUglobal,  a first year De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) Computing student is spending most of this mornth in China - and its her first ever trip overseas.

Nǐ hǎo! DMU helps thousands of children learn Mandarin

Thousands more schoolchildren in Leicestershire will be learning Chinese after a successful trip to Beijing for 10 heads and deputies from schools across the county, organised by De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

Leicestershire heads and deputies are off to Beijing with DMU

The CI is taking 10 heads and deputies from Leicestershire schools to China, to support Mandarin learning for hundreds of children in the county.

The group will fly off to Beijing on Friday 22 May for just over one week, staying on the University of Science and Technology in Beijing (USTB) campus with a packed itinerary ahead of them.

DMU Finance Department team building

The DMU Finance department enjoyed a team bonding day at the Confucius Institute on Wednesday 25 March. They took part in Chinese festivities including a tea ceremony, brush painting and a Mandarin lesson. The day was finished off with a performance from Chinese musicians who played traditional Chinese songs.

DMU’s Chinese New Year celebrations

More than 300 students, staff and members of the public gathered at Athena in Leicester on 20 February for De Montfort University’s Chinese New Year celebrations.

Guests - including Ian Blatchford, DMU’s chairman and director of the National Science Museum, Dr Jonathan Choi, chairman of the Sunwah Group, and DMU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard - enjoyed a traditional Chinese meal and entertainment from DMU students, who played Chinese musical instruments, sang, danced and gave kung fu demonstrations.

Little Bowden Primary School Chinese culture week

Children aged from three to 11 enjoyed a week of exciting Chinese activities when the Confucius Institute (CI) packed up its lion head, calligraphy brushes and musical instruments, and headed to Little Bowden Primary School in Market Harborough on 19 February.

During the hugely successful event, Chinese musicians played traditional instruments while children sang along, pupils tried their hands at traditional brush painting and cooked dumplings, and there was a lion dance, a calligraphy workshop, knot making and fan dancing.

Leicester Preparatory School culture day

To celebrate Chinese New Year, the CI arranged a day of cultural activities for Leicester Preparatory School on 9 February. Pupils took part in a variety of activities, including kung fu, brush painting, fan dancing and taster Mandarin classes. They also had the chance to play a traditional Chinese instrument, called a ‘guzheng’, and took part in a lion dance.

Linden Primary School culture day

At Linden Primary School, Leicester, two classes enjoyed a day of culture to mark Chinese New Year. On 27 January, a storyteller told a traditional tale about the origin of ‘nian’ (Chinese New Year). Pupils also experienced more modern Chinese culture, including a lion dance and a Mandarin taster session.
