Rob’s primary interest is Community Media and how different forms of media give voice to people who are marginalised by mainstream media practices and organisations. Rob has worked with different community media groups in Leicester, such as Citizens Eye, Leicester Peoples Photographic Gallery and EavaFM, supporting the development of alternative voices, encouraging participation in community media projects, and guiding community media groups to strengthen their governance practices and accountability. As well as running a number of short-term radio stations as RSL’s (restricted service licences), Rob was instrumental in transforming DemonFM from a part-time student radio station to a full-time community radio station. Rob was DemonFM’s station director from 2009-2012. Rob has been a course leader for a number of years at De Montfort University, mainly BSc Media Technology and BSc Radio Production (between 2001 to 2012). Rob’s undergraduate teaching now includes Social Media Production, and he is presently developing modules on Community Media. Rob started his PhD in 2009, and is enquiring how community media groups are transformative mechanisms for social capital development, civic accountability and personal engagement platforms.
