Personal profile

Peter was born in Glasgow but lived in Turkey and East Africa until he was 18.  His primary education was via the French Baccalaureate in Izmir - Turkey and Addis Ababa – Ethiopia; and secondary education was at the Prince of Wales School in Nairobi – Kenya.

Peter is bilingual in French, and was fluent in Turkish in younger years.  He also speaks some Spanish, Greek, Amharic and Swahili and enjoys languages.

Peter went to Strathclyde University where he obtained an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1974.

He then went into business joining Barber Greene, a manufacturer of road making equipment where he was promoted twice in six years in international sales positions: 

  • Sales Engineer
  • Sales Manager: French and Spanish speaking Europe and North Africa;
  • Sales Manager: Middle East and North Africa.    Managed 20 dealerships     

In 1980, Peter continued as Sales and Marketing Manager for Engineering products with Claas Combine Harvesters and sold customised diesel engine powerpacks for many applications. 

In 1982, Peter was invited back to Barber Greene to take up a Directorship in Marketing and Products where he ran a department of 50 people customising asphalt mixing plants for worldwide customers.

In 1985, Peter joined a GEC Division as Sales and Marketing Director, reporting to GEC HQ monthly alongside his Managing Director to report on financial and strategic plans for a division of 600 people. Turnover grew 35% over 3 years and profits went up by 50%. 

In 1988, Peter became Managing Director of Samco Strong, a Division of British United Shoe Machinery in Leicester.  During his time there, BUSM was divested and elements of it moved to the Far East.             

In 1990, Peter joined Leicester Polytechnic and worked in the Business School for the Department of Corporate Strategy.  He taught Corporate Strategy to Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Part Time professionals from industry.  He applied his experience from industry to develop a range of experiential learning courses to develop students’ integrative thinking.  This included running several 3 month customised residential programmes for practitioners from China. 

In 1995, he commenced publishing on experiential learning techniques in management journals, which he has continued to this day.

In 1994, Peter joined the Postgraduate Section of Derbyshire Business School of the University of Derby, and taught there for 6 years on Corporate Strategy, International Business and Marketing courses. 

In 2000, Peter re-joined Leicester Business School of De Montfort University, where he has since been.  He joined the Department of Corporate Strategy and developed a range of new modules in Creative Management and Enterprise; and developed new programmes ranging from Foundation Degrees to BA honours degrees in Creative Management. 

He was also a KTP Advisor for a printing company which subsequently doubled its turnover.  

He delivered Strategic Management modules to MBA students with DMU overseas partners in Singapore, South Africa, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

He contributed to Income Generation on Professional Post Graduate Courses with Alliance and Leicester, Norfork and Suffolk Constabulary, Severn Trent Water Authority and General Motors

He led the Life Long Learning Network LLN for Creative Industries – East Midlands between 2007 - 2010 

He led BABAM the BA Business Management and Administration at SCOPE, City University in Hong Kong between 2010 and 2015.                   

In 2012 Peter embarked on a Part Time PhD in Management Education at De Montfort University, which he aims to complete mid 2016.  

Research interests/expertise

Creative Management, Innovation, Entrepreneurship.  Social Network concepts with a particular focus on Boundary Spanning. Experiential Learning.
