Personal profile

In total to date, Chris has taught in twelve countries for four universities (DMU, Derby, Leeds Met and Keele).  Full-time at DMU for fifteen years, he went part-time in March 2006. He is currently module leader at DMU for PG ‘International Marketing’, and currently module leader at Keele for both PG ‘Marketing Research Theory and Practice’ and PG ‘Brands and Branding’. As above, he is a researcher by profession, and also a marketing specialist.

Since going part-time, he has taught a variety of modules (e.g. PG ‘Marketing of Services’ for Derby, and ‘Leadership, Self & Creating the Future’ for Leeds Met) in a variety of places (e.g. China, Malawi, Botswana, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Namibia). At the time of writing, he has just given up module leadership at DMU for PG ‘The Marketing Dissertation’, ‘Marketing Research in Theory & Practice’ and ‘Research for Marketers’ (still does SPSS Workshops). 

Whilst full-time with Leicester Business School at De Montfort University, he was Chief Examiner for the Market Research Society (Foundation and Certificate qualifications) for eight years, responsible for setting up those qualifications, and all academic input and assessment. At PG level, he taught Marketing Management on the part-time MBA programme, first in Leicester, then in Jakarta (Indonesia), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Singapore, and was Programme Leader of the MA Marketing Management and MSc Strategic Marketing degrees for four years.

Full-time at UG level, he was Module Leader for Market Analysis (statistics) and Market Research for eight and thirteen years respectively.  Other duties have included numerous placement visits to student interns in industry, six years as UG Marketing Course Leader, and three years as Academic Coordinator for Daly College, Indore, India.  He has also officiated as a member of the validation panel for Liaoning University in China.

Chris has carried out consultancy work for clients such as the EU (Leicester Market Strategic Survey), Ipswich Town Football Club, and Sport England, and has given occasional guest lectures at Nottingham University. Research interests include, entrepreneurship, recycling and consumer purchase decisions in relation to wine. Other areas of expertise are the pharmaceutical industry, small business and the antiques trade. 

Aged 69, he has three children and lives in Leicester. Chris likes food and wine, antiques, photography, reading, socializing, badminton and trying to keep fit.  He was Chair of Governors for eight years at the City of Leicester College.

Work experience

G.B. Ollivant Ltd (Unilever), Ciba-Geigy, Reckitt & Colman and Fisons Pharmaceutical Division, where he was Divisional Marketing Research Manager.  Research agency experience included three years at the London based Taylor-Nelson Group (now TN-Sofres), and twelve years with his own marketing research consultancy, VJ Research.  The client list there included such household names as Boots, ICI, Reckitt & Colman and 3Ms.
