Personal profile

I came to DMU in August 2012 with experience in Art, Craft and Design Higher Education, particularly in the Design Crafts subject area. I have research interests in pedagogy, craft’s values to society, materials and processes, craft’s connections to health and well being and in developing and exhibiting my own work.  

My experience of teaching is wide ranging from primary school level as Artist in Residence, through BA and MA degree levels to PhD supervising. I began my teaching career at The Oxfordshire School of Art & Design as a Foundation Art & Design tutor.

My own craft practice is described as multi-disciplinary; the work I am making at the moment has developed from observations of how we learn craft skills. I am interested in using loops of technology in my work; hand, machine and computer. New technologies are adding to methods of manufacture, reaching markets and involving the end user. I enjoy the range of possibilities available for Design Crafts as a subject, and enjoy enabling students at DMU to respond to new, exciting opportunities.   

Artists Statement

My Craft practice is about ideas and concepts as much as it is about making objects. My work involves craft values and comments on our experiences of the material world. I am interested in tangible and virtual interfaces; in the making process, the artefacts themselves and their presentation to an audience. The sensorial is of great interest to me as a craft practitioner. Virtual experiences are changing our tacit knowledge and bodily intelligence and perception of what is real. Our knowledge of materials is changing as we no longer need to make or repair things ourselves. I am interested in materiality, the tactile and sensory experience of craft and in the barriers that exist when responding to objects and materials, particularly the engagement in technical processes.
