Career opportunities

Pharmacy graduates go on to undertake rewarding and stimulating careers in community and hospital pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry.

Programme

Pharmacists are experts in all aspects of medicines and drugs; as such they play a vital role in providing quality healthcare to patients. Pharmacy classes started in Leicester in 1886.

The patient, and the way in which a Pharmacist can serve the needs of patients, is a central focus of the course. At the same time we recognise that Pharmacy is a science-based profession and that a strong scientific basis will enable you to make informed decisions in practice. Interprofessional education will encourage you to meet and work with students from other health and social care disciplines and to learn more about how to work in a multi-professional team. The course aims to produce graduates with a standard of scientific knowledge, interpersonal skills and the professional outlook necessary to embark on a career in any branch of the profession. Study a range of disciplines including:

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry
  • Medicines Design and Manufacture
  • Pharmacology and Therapeutics
  • Pharmacy Practice.

You are given support to secure a one year pre-registration work placement which you must successfully complete in order to register as a Pharmacist. You must also pass the national examination set by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

Teaching/assessment

We adopt an integrated, patient-centred approach to teaching pharmacy in modern purpose-built facilities. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, laboratory and clinical work, problem solving workshops and student presentations. Placement opportunities help you put your knowledge into practice.

Fee information

£3225 per year (these are 2009 fees and are subject to change).

"I came to DMU because I wanted to study Pharmacy. The course involved a variety of interesting modules which I enjoyed. Doing presentations increased my confidence. At the end of four years I achieved a 2:1 and at the moment I am working as a pre-registration Pharmacist at Leicester General Hospital. I am enjoying the flexibility and variety the job offers."
