Dr Stephen Handsley BA (Hons) PhD PGCertHE
Associate Professor in Sociology of Health, De Montfort University
Stephen Handsley joined the Board of Governors in September 2016 as its academic representative. He sits on the Nominations Committee.
Stephen is currently an Associate Professor in Sociology of Health at DMU. He is also Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Sociology Degree and a DMU Teacher Fellow.
Stephen has several strategic roles, including: academic representative on the Academic Board, a member of the Employability Programme Board, Chair of the Learning and Teaching Committee and Strategic Lead for Interprofessional Education in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
Stephen has chaired a range of validation and periodic review panels across DMU, along with leading the transdisciplinary group. He is an external examiner, having undertaken the role at Liverpool John Moores, Nottingham Trent and University Campus Suffolk.
Stephen is also a keen campaigner for many of the university’s institutional initiatives, such as #DMUglobal, DMU Square Mile and #DMUlocal, leading on recent field trips to Florida, whilst locally, also undertaking collaborative pedagogic interventions with Leicester Prison.
Stephen has received two student nominated Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Awards in 2012 and 2014, and a DMU Teacher Fellow Award in 2012. He has also been twice nominated for the HEA National Teacher Fellowship award.
