Vijay is the CEO of Waymade Healthcare, a global pharmaceuticals company. He is a graduate of DMU, having studied at the Leicester School of Pharmacy.
Vijay opened his first pharmacy in Essex in 1975. The business took off and this in turn fuelled growth of a chain of chemist shops. By 1982, he owned six shops and sales had doubled. Later, the company expanded into buying and supplying medicines for its own chain as well as hospitals and wholesalers.
In 1984, Vijay and his brother, Bhikhu, founded Waymade Healthcare and sold all but three of the pharmacies. In 2003, the group launched a new division, Amdipharm, to acquire and promote branded products globally. Amdipharm grew exponentially, with a presence in over 100 countries at the time of its sale, just nine years later, in 2012.
Vijay is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the UK and has formed extensive high level business links in the UK and abroad. He has made a number of innovations in manufacturing drugs and is involved in several high level UK advisory groups on overseas business development.
In 2001, he achieved the title of UK Entrepreneur of the Year and in 2006 received the Coutts Special Award for Family Philanthropy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Companion of Chartered Management Institute.
DMU awarded Vijay an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration in 2010. In autumn 2016, a building was erected at DMU’s campus in Vijay’s name which is home to the university’s art and design courses. Vijay and his wife, Smita, made the single largest donation by individuals in DMU's history of £1m to provide a series of bursaries and pay for cutting-edge equipment for the university's Pharmacy department.
In his spare time Vijay enjoys travelling the world to explore various cultures, hill walking and keeping fit.
On the subject of higher education, Vijay says:
