Solicitor - Private Client
Following graduation and the Legal Practice Course, both at DMU, I was offered a training contract with a local firm, with whom I had been gaining on-going work experience. I started applying for work experience in my second year at DMU, although I really believe, the earlier the better! Working in a law firm or barristers chambers on a voluntary basis provides an insight into a real working environment which looks fantastic on the C.V. and shows that you can use initiative in forging your own career.
I qualified into the Private Client Department and I was delighted to be offered Partnership in the firm shortly after. The well-established firm needed a revamp in order to out-last their competitors at the height of the recession and myself and another colleague joined the partnership to provide a more contemporary ethos. The firm is now doing brilliantly and is looking to expand. A Partnership role so early in my career was an unbelievably rewarding challenge, but I felt that it was time to look outside of Leicester to pursue different challenges and ambition.
Having subsequently relocated to London, I am now heading up a Private Client department with a firm in the heart of the city, WT Law LLP, working on some fascinating and complex cases.
My advice for anyone interested in a career in law would be – do not be afraid to ask for help (the DMU tutors can provide fantastic guidance and support); follow your ambition, regardless of how unattainable it may seem as an undergraduate; and ENJOY every opportunity that comes your way!
